Dad on Mother’s Day

This Sunday on Mother’s Day I sat in the dining room at Drury Inn in Albuquerque, NM.  A tall man, about 6-foot-four, walked through the line to pile food on his plate. He wore a red T-shirt with large letters “DAD” on it.

I thought it was odd for a man to wear a “dad” t-shirt on Mother’s Day. Was he insensitive to his wife?  Was he oblivious that it was even Mother’s Day?

The next day I thought about it some more.  It then occurred to me. Maybe he was a single parent raising a child or children.

Maybe he was both a “Mom” and a “Dad” to his children.  It was then, obviously, appropriate for him to wear a “Dad” t-shirt on Mother’s Day.
