Two teenagers were prominent in my world of news this week — Michael Brown and Sadie Robertson. And, they are worlds…no, universes apart.
Michael, 18, was killed in self-defense by a police officer, the grand jury ruled Monday night. Brown had robbed a convenience store minutes before. He tried to wrestle a gun from the officer and he hit the officer with his fist. Riots erupted this week with looting, vandalism and businesses set aflame in Ferguson, Missouri. Demonstrations with arrests also erupted in cities and towns across America.
Meanwhile, Sadie, 17, who had no dance experience at all, swept through the 11-week Dancing With Stars TV show against stiff competition and came in 2nd place last night. Sadie is the daughter of Willie & Kori of Duck Dynasty fame. Sadie upheld her Christian standards and refused to wear the near-naked costumes other women dancers wore. She was caught on TV praying out loud with her dance partner before a competition. She impressed the judges, the other competitors and people across the nation with her high moral standards and sparkling and friendly personality. One judge told the nation Sadie was a positive role model.
“Sadie, I think you’re an excellent role model and a representation of what youth should be today,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. “You’re clean, you’re elegant … everything about you I love.”
Right or wrong, Michael, whose death was certainly a tragic event, also has become a role model. Michael and Sadie are two role models…worlds…no, universes apart.
